When it comes to pregnancy, labor, and delivery, many parents in the Michiana region are seeking support systems that can guide them through this transformative experience. Doulas, trained professionals who offer physical, emotional, and informational support and advocacy to parents before, during, and after childbirth, have become an increasingly popular choice. However, despite the growing awareness of doulas, several myths about their roles and the benefits they offer continue to persist.
In this blog, we’ll debunk some of these common myths and help Michiana parents better understand the value of doulas. But, first if you want to learn more about me, let's connect during your FREE 1-hour consultation call. You can book it here! Okay, now, let's dive right into debunking these myths.
Myth #1: Doulas are only for “natural” births
One of the most common misconceptions about doulas is that they are only for those who are planning a "natural" birth, without medication or interventions. In reality, doulas support all types of births, regardless of the birthing plan. Whether you’re planning a home birth, a hospital birth, or a cesarean section, a doula’s role is to provide emotional and physical support, advocate for your preferences, and help you navigate the process of childbirth. Doulas are there to ensure you feel heard, empowered, and informed, no matter how your birth unfolds. You get to choose the empowering birth experience you want and I am here to walk alongside you in that journey.
Myth #2: Doulas replace medical professionals
Another misconception is that doulas replace doctors or midwives. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Doulas work alongside your healthcare team to enhance the care you receive. While your doctor or midwife focuses on medical procedures and decisions, the doula focuses on supporting your emotional well-being, offering comfort measures, and providing informational resources. Doulas help you communicate your needs and preferences to the medical team, ensuring you have a collaborative birth experience. Doulas do not preform any medical procedures on your or your baby.
Myth #3: Doulas only provide support during labor for Michiana parents.
Some people believe that a doula’s support is limited to the actual labor and delivery. While doulas do provide significant assistance during labor, their role begins much earlier. Doulas offer prenatal support, answering questions, discussing birth plans, and helping you prepare mentally and emotionally for childbirth. They also offer postpartum support, assisting with breastfeeding, newborn care, and adjusting to life with a new baby. This continuous support before, during, and after birth can make a significant difference in a family’s experience and well-being.

Myth #4: Doulas are expensive and not covered by insurance
Many people assume that hiring a doula is a financial burden, but the cost of hiring a doula varies depending on the region and the doula’s experience. In some cases, doulas may be covered by insurance or eligible for reimbursement through health savings accounts (HSAs) or flexible spending accounts (FSAs). Additionally, some doulas offer sliding scale fees or payment plans to make their services more accessible. It’s important for Michiana parents to explore the financial options available to them and consider doulas as an investment in their birth experience and overall well-being.
I offer both payment plan and sliding scale rates for my clients. Furthermore, I am able to deal with some insurance providers and HSA/FSA reimbursement plans.
Myth #5: Doulas are only for first-time parents
While many first-time parents turn to doulas for support, experienced parents can also benefit from having a doula by their side. Each pregnancy and birth experience is unique, and a doula can offer support in a variety of ways. For second or third-time parents, a doula can help manage the demands of a growing family, provide additional support during labor, and ensure that parents feel confident and informed throughout the birth process.
Myth #6: Doulas aren’t necessary if you have a strong support system
Having a supportive partner, family, or friends is invaluable during pregnancy and childbirth, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a doula isn’t beneficial. A doula provides specialized knowledge and skills that go beyond emotional support. Their training in pain management techniques, comfort measures, and birth advocacy can complement the support you receive from loved ones. Doulas also offer continuous care during labor, whereas other support people may need to take breaks or may not be as familiar with the birth process.
