My Top 3 Grounding Methods for Birth as a South Bend, Indiana Doula

As a South Bend Indiana Doula and nearby areas, one of the many things I support clients with during birth is grounding methods. Yep, that deep, steady feeling that keeps you rooted when everything around you is shifting (sometimes literally, if we’re talking labor contractions).
Whether you're planning a home birth, hospital birth, or something in between, labor can bring up intense physical sensations and emotions. That's where grounding comes in. When you're grounded, you’re more connected to your body, more present with your experience, and more confident in your choices.
Today I’m sharing my top three grounding methods that I’ve seen work time and time again for the birthing people I support. These are simple, effective tools that can help you stay centered through the ebb and flow of labor. You don’t have to master all the techniques—just find what resonates with you and tuck it into your birth toolbox.
1. Intentional Breathwork That Actually Helps
I know, I know—everyone says “just breathe.” But not all breathwork is created equal. The key here is intentional breathing that matches the rhythm of your body and brings you back to center.
My favorite method is the 4-7-8 breath:
Inhale for 4 counts
Hold for 7 counts
Exhale slowly for 8 counts
You can use this during early labor to calm your nervous system, or between contractions when you're in active labor to reset and recenter. Even partners can do it with you, creating this calming ripple effect in your birth space.
I also love a box breath method which 4-4-4-4 breath:
Inhale for 4 counts
Hold for 4 counts
Exhale slowly for 4 counts
Pause for 4 counts and Repeat!
In South Bend hospitals especially, where fluorescent lights and beeping machines are often part of the scenery, breathwork becomes your portable calm. It’s free, it’s always available, and it genuinely works. I practice breathwork with my client prenatally so they are prepared when they enter the birth space.

2. Touchstones: Physical Items With Emotional Power
This one is so personal and yet so powerful. I always recommend having a grounding object with you—a small item that brings comfort, focus, or emotional strength. Some of my clients in Michiana have brought:
A smooth river stone from a favorite walk
Their favorite stuffed animal or one they bought for baby
A ultrasound photo
An affirmation card tucked into a birth bag
A cloth with essential oil they’ve been using throughout pregnancy
I like to call them “touchstones” because, truly, you can touch them when everything feels intense. Having something familiar and emotionally significant is a great way to keep your focus during labor—especially when things feel uncertain or overwhelming.
Bonus tip: These items also help doulas (like me!) support you even more intuitively, because I can gently hand you your stone or card as a cue to reconnect with your strength.
3. Verbal Anchoring: Repeating Words That Bring You Back with a South Bend Indiana Doula
Words are powerful.
And when it comes to birth, they can either ground you—or pull you out of your zone.
That’s why I love using verbal anchors. These are affirmations, mantras, or even single words that you repeat out loud or in your mind during labor. Some popular ones my South Bend birth clients have used include:
“I trust my body.”
“This is temporary.”
“Open.”
“Breathe in strength, breathe out fear.”
The beauty of this method? It’s super flexible. Whether you’re birthing with an epidural at Memorial Hospital, going unmedicated at a nearby birth center, or doing your thing at home in the area, these words are yours.
They remind you who you are, why you're doing this, and that you are not alone.
At the end of the day, grounding during birth isn’t about being perfectly calm the whole time. It’s about knowing how to come back to yourself—over and over again—as your body does the hard, beautiful work of bringing life into the world.
