How to Search for 'Doula Near Me' & Find the Right Fit

Congratulations! You found out you are pregnant and probably are making your way through your first or second trimester. But now you are thinking about the end game-BIRTH....which means you may also be considering the support team you want to build for that special day.

Your doula search begins and you are unsure how to find the right fit for you. After frantically searching 'doula near me' on Google at 3am you still are not sure what the next steps will be.

Have no fear-- I've got you. In today's post, I break down all the top things to consider when searching for the right 'doula near me'. Because, finding a doula does not have to be daunting. There is a right doula out there for everybody.

Step 1: Searching for 'Doula Near Me'

When doula search time kicks into gear, the first step is to find someone who serves your area. Some doulas set a radius based off of distance and others are more flexible. For example, I now serve about a 1 hour radius from Elkhart, Indiana for in person doula services. I do all of my client prenatal and postpartum visits in person at the home of my clients. So, both their living location and planned birth location need to be within that general range. You also want to make sure that they are available for your estimated due date.

Step 2: The Doula Consultation Process

Next, I always recommend connecting for a short doula consultation. This is both your time to see if you are compatible with the doula and their time to do the same. Ultimately, there are a lot of questions you can ask to make sure you feel aligned with your doula. However, I always tell people to trust their gut and go with who they feel the most comfortable and compatible with. If the doula says something that really resonates with you during your consult, chances are they would be a good fit for you.

You want someone who truly sees your desires, understands the type of support you are seeking, and will protect your birth space in real time.

Questions to Consider at a Consultation

While there are endless questions you can ask at a consultation, here are my top 4 recommendations.

1. What is your approach to birth doula support? What types of births do you support?

   This reveals if the doula would be a good fit for you. Many doulas serve all types of births and birth locations. However, some doulas only serve hospital births or only attend home births. Furthermore, some doulas might have strong preferences or personal biases which could make you feel unsupported down the road.

2. What does working together look like?

   This gives you an idea of how many meeting you get with your doulas, what those include and what contact in between those meetings looks like. Some people want a doula who is there as a touch point at any time. Others, want a doula who is mainly there for the birth.

3. What is your favorite part about being a doula?

   I think this one is often overlooked but can reveal a lot about your doula's approach to birth work and their stance on different birth approaches.

4. How would you support (X,Y,Z) situation?

   Honestly, sometimes these type of questions can be hard to answer because it would depend on many factors in the moment. However, I still love having the opportunity to give some examples of how I have supported clients through various situations in the past and what my role looks like in those moments.

Finding a 'Doula Near Me': Making Your Selection

After interviewing at least two doulas, now is the time to make your selection. Again, I always tell people to go with the doula who you feel the most aligned and connected with-- the one who really saw and heard you! Sometimes you feel this during the consult itself and if that is the case- go for it. You know your needs best.

When the time comes, reach out to your new doula and make things final. Congratulations! You are now one step closer to having a comprehensive birth team for your big day.
